CHOPSTICKS 箸, MILAN
04.2026
Curated by Yoko Choy and presented during Milan Design Week 2026, the exhibition brings together 16 creatives from China, Japan, South Korea, and beyond, including NICEWORKSHOP.
Engineered Chopsticks is a design object that reinterprets chopsticks through the lens of metal engineering. For experienced users, chopsticks are an everyday tool. For first-time users, however, they often require practice and learned technique. In response, the piece was redesigned so that users more familiar with knife-and-fork dining culture can handle it more intuitively without additional aids.
Rather than following the conventional format of two parallel sticks, it adopts a mechanism similar to a plate spring. Through wire cutting and precise heat treatment, finely calibrated elasticity is built directly into the metal itself. Formed as one continuous body instead of two separate elements, it naturally opens during use and returns through its own restoring force.
The grip is also designed to guide finger placement, improving clarity and ease of use. This is not simply a formal proposal, but an approach that shapes the act of handling chopsticks itself. While preserving the delicacy unique to chopsticks, it offers a more stable and intuitive user experience.
