Aluminum scrap is generated during the processing of aluminum formwork, which is used to shape the frames of concrete structures.
This scrap is melted down and reused in the manufacturing of new aluminum formwork. Design studio Niceworkshop collaborates with the upcycling brand FORMAT to present a new series that explores the circulation, recycling, and reuse of construction materials.
Formwork molds are used to combine aluminum scrap and building insulation, shaping them into modular blocks through an exposed concrete process. These blocks are produced in three sizes and can be arranged into various forms of furniture, including benches, sofas, and chairs. This series expands the potential of aluminium formwork and proposes a new way to utilize industrial scrap generated from construction processes. This work was exhibited at the Harajuku gallery "StandBy" until March 30, 2025. Artworks created overseas often incur significant transportation costs. Within the constraints of a limited exhibition period, works frequently shuttle back and forth between Korea and Japan. We perceive this situation as a VOID in which we can exploit at SKAC by reutilising our space as both a warehouse and sales hub while simultaneously opening it to the public as a gallery.
